Press release: Socialist and Social Democratic youth from the Meuse-Rhine Euregion meet in Maastricht

MAASTRICHT/HASSELT/AACHEN/LIEGE – Saturday, 29th of June, representatives of Animo Limburg (BE), JS Limburg (NL), Jusos Aachen (D) and MJS Liège (BE) gathered for the first time in their history. The four organizations are the youth branches of resp. sp.a, PvdA, SPD and PS. For their first meeting, the young socialist movement chose a rather symbolic meeting point: Maastricht, the cradle of Europe where 12 member states signed the Treaty on European Union back in 1992. Maastricht is also in the running to become Cultural Capital in 2018.

The agenda contained, besides getting to know each other, topics such as mobility, education and border labour. “In spite of the fact that officially there is free movement of people, goods, services and capital, often people are confronted with administrative borders,” says Rob Declerck, representative for Animo Limburg. “That’s among other situations the case for those who would like to work in another member state, with different tax law. That is a pity, because it obstructs cooperation which is vital for the growth of the region.”

As their first core topic, the young socialists decided on mobility and connection. This seems to be a sore spot for all subregions in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion. “Some crucial train connections are missing, others are under severe pressure,” says Seddik Ghoule of JS Limburg. Yasmine Jarine of MJS Liège complements: “A good transportation system plays a vital role in the attraction of large companies such as DSM and Siemens and related employments.” The four youth parties therefore announce actions for the month of August.

Animo Limburg, Jusos Aachen, MJS Liège en JS Limburg conclude their joint statement with the fact that in the future, the four organisations will cooperate more around topics that are mutual for the German-speaking Community (BE), the provinces of Liège (BE), Limburg (BE), Limburg (NL) and the region of Aachen (D). “The borders between our homes are part of the past,” thus concludes Tobias Küppers, one  of the Jusos Aachen representatives. “Only by working together, we will advance.”

MAASTRICHT/HASSELT – Zaterdag 29 juli kwamen vertegenwoordigers van Animo Limburg (BE), Jusos Aachen (D), MJS Liège (BE) en JS Limburg (NL) voor het eerst in hun geschiedenis samen rond de twee zaken die hun binden: socialisme en de Euregio Maas-Rijn. De vier organisaties zijn de jongerenorganisaties van resp. sp.a, SPD, PS en PvdA. Als locatie voor deze eerste ontmoeting kozen de jonge socialisten voor het symbolische Maastricht, de stad waar in 1992 het ’verdrag betreffende de Europese Unie’ door12 landen werd ondertekend en die kandidaat is om in 2018 Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa te worden.

Op de agenda stond allereerst kennismaking. Ook thema’s als mobiliteit, onderwijs en grensarbeid kwamen uitgebreid aan bod. “Hoewel er officieel een vrij verkeer van personen, goederen, diensten en kapitaal van kracht is, wordt er vaak nog op een administratieve grens gestoten,” aldus Rob Declerck van Animo Limburg. “Dat is onderandere het geval wanneer men in een andere lidstaat, met andere fiscale wetgeving, wil gaan werken. Dat is jammer, want het staat verregaande samenwerking in de weg. Samenwerking waarbij we allemààl winnaar zouden zijn.”

Als eerste kernthema kozen de jonge socialisten voor mobiliteit en verbinding. In alle deelregio’s van de euregio Maas-Rijn, blijkt dit immers een pijnpunt. Zo ontbreken er een aantal cruciale treinverbindingen, waar de bestaande vaak in vraag staan. Nochtans is een goed uitgebouwd transportsysteem levensbelangrijk willen we als regio grote spelers als DSM en Siemens en de bijhorende tewerkstelling aantrekken. De vier jongerenorganisaties kondigen dan ook acties aan voor de maand augustus.

Animo Limburg, Jusos Aachen, MJS Liège en JS Limburg laten voorts nog weten dat ze in het licht van de diverse verkiezingen die er in de Euregio aankomen in 2013 en 2014, intensiever zullen gaan samen werken rond Europese thema’s en dossiers die zowel beide provincies Limburg, de provincie Luik, de Duitstalige Gemeenschap en Noordrein-Westfalen aanbelangen. “De grenzen tussen onze thuisgebieden behoren voor ons tot het verleden,” zo besluit Rob. “Alleen door intensief samen te werken kunnen we vooruit.”

Euregio Maas-Rijn: And so it begins...

"Wat doen ze daar nu eigenlijk bij Animo Limburg? Waarom is die provinciale koepel er nu eigenlijk?" Het antwoord is simpel: we zijn er om kennismaking en samenwerking te bevorderen, om aan bovenlokale en provinciale realiteiten een antwoord te kunnen bieden, wars van gemeentelijke grenzen, om leden zonder lokale afdeling een thuis te kunnen geven in de grote Animo-familie. Maar we zijn er ook om internationale samenwerking te realiseren. Samen met ondervoorzitter en internationaal secretaris voor Animo Limburg, Rob Declerck kijken we over de schutting bij de buren.

Nieuwsbrief April 2012 - Deel 3 - (Euregion Conference)

Het weekend van 19 en 20 mei organiseert onze Nederlandse zusterorganisatie JS Zuid-Limburg voor de allereerste keer een grensoverschrijdende conferentie voor jonge sociaaldemocraten en socialisten uit Nederland, België en Duitsland. Tijdens de debatten, lezingen, trainingen etc. zullen de Eurgio en haar bijzondere kenmerken een bijlangrijke rol spelen. Daarnaast zal er uiteraard ook uitgebreid de gelegenheid zijn voor het smeden van banden tussen de verschillende jongsocialistische verenigingen die dit "Europese kruispunt" rijk is.

Euregion Conference 2012

In the weekend of 19-20 May 2012 we as Jonge Socialisten Limburg South will organize the first Euregion conference. During this conference various activities will take place, all of which will be from a European, and especially a Euregion perspective. The activities will vary from an interactive lecture to a debate. Also trainings will be provided to improve your political skills. Of course, there will also be time for some drinks and fun during a BBQ and party.

The main reason to organize the Euregion conference is to strengthen the relationships between the political youth organizations. We believe that cooperation is necessary because there are a lot of threats and opportunities for the Euregion Meuse-Rhine. The geographic position, for instance, gives the region lots of opportunities to make the region more prosper and therefore this is something we should take advantage of.

The first Euregion conference should be a start to develop a strong bond between the Dutch, Belgium and German Young Socialists. But not only a strong bond is important. We also believe that if we cooperate, we can handle the challenges we will meet in our lifetime. Doing so, we can make this region a state of the art place where people love to work, go to school, meet their friends and have a good life.
